Christmas Tree for U.S. Capitol on Way From California

A 65-foot white fir tree selected as
the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree was cut down and removed from a
picturesque setting in the Sierra Nevada mountains on Saturday, then
loaded on a truck for a 4,500-mile journey from Northern California to
Washington, D.C.
When crews arrived at the tree Saturday
morning they found it covered in snow, said Jeff Crider, a spokesman for
U.S Capitol Christmas Tree Tour, a nonprofit project overseen by the
U.S. Forest Service.
The Stanislaus National Forest tree was selected based on its shape and fullness and color, officials said.
Work crews will box it up on Sunday, with a
portion encased in Plexiglas so that people can view it during its
upcoming nationwide tour. A bladder bag attached to its base will be
filled with water on a daily basis to keep the tree fresh, Crider said.
The tree is scheduled to arrive in
Washington, D.C. on Nov. 28, with a lighting ceremony at the front of
the U.S. Capitol on Dec. 6.

Suffragettes Saluted In Spectacular Fashion In Fourth Of July Parade
By Carol Rock | KHTS AM-1220
June 8, 2011
If you're a woman, the Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade Committee wants you to be in a parade.
Not just "in" a parade, but quite possibly, the Grand Marshal.
The theme of this year's Independence Day celebration is "Women's Right To Vote."
No big thing today, right? In California, women have had the
right to vote for 100 years; the 19th Amendment, which spread that right
to all the states, was passed 91 years ago. Let us remind you that our
country is 235 years old.
Women had no voice for 135-145 years.
Yeah, it's a big deal.
Mayor Marsha McLean and Councilwoman Laurene Weste would like to
lead a large contingent of women marching to celebrate those
suffragettes who made sure every one of us women could express ourselves
at the ballot box.
Instead of one celebrity waving from an open convertible, the
Grand Marshal of this parade will be a force of nature, sisters marching
side by side on the mile-long route.
"Wouldn't it be grand to have 200 women marching with signs and
costumes from all the eras?" Weste asked. "I think this community can do
it."
The invitation is open to all women — professional groups, Girl
Scouts, single mothers, students, soccer moms, cougars (even those who
did not attend College of the Canyons), entrepreneurs, play groups,
nursing mothers, feminists, softball players, performers, librarians and
readers, teachers, nurses…you get the picture.
Female? Put on your marching shoes.
Participants are encouraged to wear historical costumes if they
can — they're easy to put together, look up "suffragettes" and check out
the pictures, but if modern day wear is more appealing, then plan
patriotic.
This is, after all, a party.
The parade is a local tradition that's nearly 80 years in the
running. It is organized by a handful of volunteers, most of whom have
been involved so long they can't tell you when they started. The
quintessential American community celebration of our nation's
independence draws about 20,000 spectators to the route, which begins at
Hart Park, goes down Main Street, turns onto Lyons Avenue, then up
Orchard Village Road and disbanding at Newhall Park.
The Fourth of July Parade starts at 9 a.m. The weather is
supposed to be spectacular. The early deadline for entries is June 19.
The "you're late, so you have to pay a penalty" date is June 26. No
entries will be accepted after 5 p.m. June 26, regardless of the
postmark.

Annual Veterans’ Holiday Celebration
Monday November 15, 2010 9:11am

December 5th, 2010 - West Los Angeles VA Campus
Over the past seventeen years, we have
produced an amazing event at the West Los
Angeles VA facility – the Annual Veterans’ Holiday Celebration.
This year we will continue our legacy of providing homemade
meals, gifts, entertainment and a huge holiday party for the
men and women who have given everything of themselves for
our freedom and our country.
On the first Sunday of every December, the VA Greater
Los Angeles, VA Voluntary Service, over 100 restaurants and
local businesses and the community at large, along with over
700 volunteers, come together as one. This union of men and
women help us maintain our vision to provide a memorable
meal, gifts, and entertainment, as well as much needed
appreciation.
We all have one common purpose: a strong desire to give back
and honor the men and women who put their lives on the line
in order for all of us to live in this great nation.
As many of the veterans return from wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, many will be diagnosed and treated with extreme
cases of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and physical
injuries. These truths highlight just how important the
Annual Veterans' Holiday Celebration has become, by honoring
them, welcoming them back and showing, in a small but truly
significant way, that there is indeed a home for them to
return to.
We thank you on behalf of the Veterans and Active Duty
Personnel.

Ride to the Flags
Thursday August 26, 2010 1:00am
Gary Sinise Charitable Foundation will host a
ride from the Point Mugu to Pepperdine University. For our NY Fire
Fighters and our Military. It's gonna be an incredibly special day for
everyone.
Meet at the post at 08:00, KSU at 8:30.
September 11, 2010
Gates will open at 9:30am
Registration will begin at 9:30am
Registration will CLOSE at 11:30am
It
is our desire to encompass everything that 9/11 should commemorate
while paying proper tribute to those who lost their lives on this
tragic day and fighting for our country since. Putting the ride in
perspective with the occasion, our celebration of freedom will be present at our staging area - Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station.
The staging area will serve as the bulk of our celebration event. The
riders will then partake on a 2-hour ride through the most beautiful
scenery in Southern California. While
most motorcycle rides start small and end large the RTTF will instead
end in solemn respect at 2,977 full sized flags standing high atop
10-foot poles facing the Pacific Ocean - one for every innocent life taken on 9/11. Taking a knee in prayer, we’ll pay our respects silently before departing.
There
will be no minimum charge to ride in the ride. We only ask that you
give what you can. We trust that you will give graciously.
Every dime that you can give to this ride as a rider will be given straight to Snowball Express, Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, and The Stephen Siller FDNY Children’s Foundation via the Gary Sinise Foundation.
We will not provide ride t-shirts. Everything given to the riders will be donated items.
Every
dollar that would be spent designing and purchasing a t-shirt could be
one more dollar towards helping our men and women in uniform.
If you are looking for a ride that will give you free stuff, there are many of those out there. This isn’t it.
